To me, fly fishing is a serious business, so when you get that precious time on the river, the last thing you should be doing - in the words of John Geirach -  is 'waving a stick around'. The fly rod is a sophisticated tool, the most important part of your kit. It gets the fly out to where it needs to be, whether it's a size 22 dry, heavy tungsten bug or a stripping lure, and it's your contact with the aquatic world. It allows you to sense what's going on under the surface. Fly rods come in all sorts of configurations for all these different tasks: super fast and tippy, right down to full parabolic, where you can feel the bend right down into the handle. There is no one rod that will cover all your fishing needs, so, the good news is, you need lots of rods! Most importantly, they should look damn good!
